Johnny Potato Seed (JPS) is a passion project of Jon Agnew and Brian Smith. We run a seed potato services company that works with numerous growers, plant breeders, and certification organizations across the United States and Canada. Our company services hundreds of cultivars annually and all classifications of seed spuds. Our specialization is in potato pathology and cultivar identification.
We started JPS to give gardeners, nurseries, and hobby farmers the best selection of certified seed potatoes and to archive a potato pedagogy for those who share our interest in growing tubers. We think potatoes are one of the best plants to grow. Potatoes have a history of feeding the world, can grow anywhere, and they produce some of the most beautiful plants, flowers, and vegetables agriculture has to offer. In light of such, we wanted to use JPS to hedge out “bad potato seed” on the internet and to raise awareness of improper potato practices—such as using grocery or ware potatoes as seed.
